A Tropical Storm Watch is in influence from Acapulco to Zihuatanejo. Forecasters say Carlos is expected to turn out to be a hurricane over the weekend.

Inexperienced swimmers were warned to stay out of the water during these periods.

“We expect to have elevated rip currents and that’s important for the public to know because that’s 90 percent of our rescues”, said Newport Beach Lifeguard Battalion Chief Mike Halphide.

Also expected from Dolores is the possibility of thunderstorms.

There is a roughly 30 percent chance of rain on Saturday, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasters also warned that with the chance of thunderstorms comes the danger of lightning strikes, which can spark brush fires.

Tropical cyclones need sea surface temperatures of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.6 Celsius) to maintain strength, and a new infrared image from NASA’s Aqua satellite shows that Tropical Storm Enrique has moved into an area where temperatures are under that threshold. The worst weather will likely come early Sunday morning and last through Monday. “In addition, Dolores will generate large southerly swell that will produce big surf and strong rip currents on south facing beaches this weekend”.

Satellite imagery shows Tropical Storm Dolores as of Friday morning
