Glenn Reynolds: Playing the ‘Bill card’ against Hillary
“You look at it, it’s tremendous abuse”.

At the moment, 2016 watchers are wondering whether certain things are “fair game” or not, which is another way of asking whether we should object not just to the substance of an attack, but to the attack’s subject matter itself.
Trump defended his criticism of the former president on Wednesday, telling supporters at a SC rally that he was merely responding to Hillary Clinton, who had been hitting him “really hard with the women card”. Thanks to Donald Trump, the immediate topic is Bill Clinton’s sexual history, but this probably won’t be the last time the “fair game” question arises.
On Wednesday, Trump brought up Bill Clinton again, suggesting that the real estate mogul’s comments about the former president effectively stopped Hillary Clinton from mentioning Trump.
Trump added he occasionally has to turn off the TV because Hillary Clinton gives him a headache.
Previously Trump has said that President Clinton’s prior scandals are “fair game” and, when asked Tuesday night in Council Bluffs, Iowa, if his own prior indiscretions could be treated the same, he agreed they could be.
The former Democratic president has a “terrible record of women abuse”, the Republican front-runner Trump tweeted Monday. Hillary Clinton had some of her highest approval ratings ever after revelations that Bill Clinton had a relationship with Lewinsky, a 22-year-old White House intern.
Tensions have been boiling over between the two frontrunners in recent days, stemming from Trump’s late December comment that Clinton got “schlonged” in the 2008 primary. “Clinton has preyed on them”. Clinton was absolved, supporters argued, because everyone lies about sex. She predicted Trump’s attacks on Bill Clinton would sway few voters.
Their two daughters, Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton, maintain a seemingly unlikely friendship. But, some observers warn, they could pose a long-term risk for Trump in his effort to succeed President Obama.
“Hillary Rodham Clinton is probably going to back away from this approach – because there’s no question about it, whether you agree or disagree with the Donald, he’s got a right to make that case and he has certainly indicated a propensity to go right after somebody than when they come after him”. Clinton allies have bristled at the idea of Trump bringing personal dirt onto the trail, with the candidate saying he has a “penchant for sexism”. No evidence against Bill Clinton was ever found, though he did settle Jones’ sexual harassment lawsuit for $850,000.
Not only that, she is accusing her putative opponent Donald Trump of sexism. (If he were, he’d probably win.) It’s Hillary Clinton who’s likely to be on the 2016 ballot, and even this field of GOP candidates isn’t prepared to start blaming her for her husband’s infidelity. Trump has been known to brand women who aren’t ornamental as “losers”.

To be clear: I don’t think for a moment that the people who hope to use Broaddrick against Hillary care about victim blaming. “Most people, however, grasp that one can have an affair, even a highly inappropriate affair with a much-younger woman, while still maintaining the belief that women are equal to men and capable of doing things like holding higher office”.
