Bill Cosby Charged with Aggravated Indecent Assault; Bail Set at $1 Million
Cosby did not enter a plea and posted $1 million bail on aggravated indecent assault charges – punishable by five to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine – stemming from accusations he drugged and sexually violated Constand, now 42, at his suburban Philadelphia home in January 2004.

Cosby has previously said what happened between him and Constand was consensual, but in more recent court filings Constand said it was not consensual, and that she was in a relationship with another woman at the time.
The charge stems from allegations leveled by Andrea Constand, 44, who settled a civil case against Cosby for an undisclosed sum in 2006.
Cosby’s lawyer said she expected prosecutors would try to establish a pattern of conduct against her client by bringing in allegations from his other accusers, but the defense would fight to keep inappropriate evidence out.
Pennsylvania, where the charges were filed, has a 12-year statute of limitations on felony sex crimes.
While over 50 women have accused Cosby of sexual assault, this charge is in regards to the alleged 2004 sexual assault of Andrea Constand. Model Chloe Goins has accused Cosby of drugging and assaulting her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, when she was just a teenager.
The case adds to the towering list of legal problems facing the TV star, including defamation and sexual abuse lawsuits filed in Boston, Los Angeles and Pennsylvania.
“In a civil deposition he gave in 2005, Cosby admitted giving Constand “blue pills” in order “…to help take some of the stress and tension away”. As for most of Cosby’s other alleged victims, the law says it’s too late. Detectives reopened the case because of information obtained from the unsealed deposition when they realized their window to prosecute had not closed.
Within three months of the encounter, Constand returned to her parents’ home in Canada, the complaint says, and her mother took notice of her troubled demeanor.
She says Cosby “fondled her breasts” and then sexually assault on her. She says she woke up at 4 a.m. with her “sweater bunched up” and her “bra undone”.
After a press conference to announce the charges, Cosby, 78, appeared in court in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, followed by a processing at the Cheltenham Police Department.
In 1965, Cosby became the first black actor to land a leading role in a network drama I Spy, and he went on to earn three Emmys.
A day after he was charged with sexual assault, Bill Cosby’s lawyers launched a campaign Thursday to portray the charge against him as false and politically motivated.

Despite her impairments, Constand said she was aware Cosby was groping her and performing sex acts, but she was “paralysed” and unable to stop him. “So, I’m sure that in the court documents for this case, once we are allowed to say what needs to be said, everything will be made clear”.
