The White House would not say whether the Secret Service changed the venue amid fears that the place could be bugged after it was sold to a Chinese insurance company previous year for almost $2 billion.

Since the days of Herbert Hoover, who ran the country from 1923 till 1933, United States presidents have traditionally stayed in the Waldorf Astoria.

Obama, here for a fundraiser and Broadway show, will stay at Millennium’s ONE UN New York, near the United Nations, which sources said would likely be his regular hotel when he’s in town.

Afterwards, Obama will spend the weekend in New York with his daughters for a little “personal time”.

The weekend is also reported for the president to spend quality time with his daughters, Sasha and Malia.

The President will take in a matinee of the show “Hamilton” before heading back to Washington on Saturday.
