The resignations of Carson campaign manager Barry Bennett and communications director Doug Watts came a week after Carson met with reporters in the basement of his Maryland home in which he said his campaign would be undergoing a shakeup.
“Barry Bennett and I have resigned from the Carson campaign effective immediately”, Watts said.
Carson’s outsider status seemed to give him an advantage in the 2016 race. The retired neurosurgeon also had finances on his side.
Carson has dropped in the polls in recent weeks.
A recent CNN/ORC poll showed Carson tied with Sen. That number plummeted to just 11 percent in December.
Carson this week said his campaign plans “alterations” to respond more aggressively to challenges to his life story and foreign policy expertise that have created a negative impression of him with some voters.
But Bennett, a longtime political operative, predicted more departures. Patrick Murray, the director of polling at Monmouth University, explains this tricky contrast.
“I think there will be a lot more defections”.

“We’re going to certainly be altering some things in the campaign, and we will be talking about that quite publicly next week”, Carson told Fox Business Network’s Neil Cavuto on Tuesday.
