Belgium battles terror on two fronts on New Year’s Eve
Belgian prosecutors say six people have been detained in connection with an alleged plot to attack public New Year’s Eve celebrations, which had already been cancelled due to the threat of terrorism. A judge was expected to decide later Thursday whether they could be held longer.

The arrests come as cities around the world heighten security measures ahead of large-scale New Year celebrations.
The prosecutor’s office provided no further details, but French police reports cited by the Le Monde newspaper have said the Paris attackers were in cellphone contact with two numbers in Belgium during the night of the killings, in which 130 people lost their lives. “In these circumstances, we can’t check everyone”, Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said.
Meanwhile in Turkey, security services said they have prevented a major plot to attack Ankara.
New Year fireworks and festivities have been cancelled in the Belgian capital, Brussels because of an alert. The fireworks display has been cancelled in Paris but will be replaced with a video display on the Arc de Triomphe.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said the Brussels decision had been taken “given information we have received”.
By The Associated Press In Bangkok, police-flanked partygoers will ring in the new year at the site of a deadly bombing that took place just months ago. The capital itself was on the maximum alert level four for nearly a week last month.
The man arrested, a Belgian national born in 1993 and identified only as Ayoub B., was detained Wednesday following a search in the Molenbeek neighbourhood of Brussels, where some of the Paris attackers lived, including suspected ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud.
Seven weeks after the latest attacks and a week before the first anniversary of the gunning-down of cartoonists and staff at satirical paper Charlie Hebdo, Paris is greeting the New Year in what Mayor Anne Hidalgo called “an atmosphere of sobriety and togetherness”.
The US embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, warned its citizens of “possible attacks” against hotels and clubs in the city in connection with New Year’s Eve celebrations.

A spokesman for the Italian police force said there would be more than 30 percent more officers on duty across the country than a year ago, “not because it’s New Year but because of what happened on November 13 in Paris”. The Mayor also said that the security of people visiting the city centre would be ensured.
