Don’t Let Uber Surge Pricing Ruin Your New Year’s Eve
In an email, company spokeswoman Mary Caroline Pruitt said Lyft is the only ridesharing platform that caps price multipliers during its busiest time, so the price of the ride will never be multiplied more than 200 percent.

With last New Year’s Eve turning out to be the busiest night Uber ever experienced in its short existence thus far, this time around, the company has announced in advance that its surge pricing will come into effect thirty minutes into the New Year and last till four in the morning.
Uber encouraged users to take advantage of its “Fare Estimate” feature to find out what they’re in for: “After you’ve tapped “Set Pickup location” and entered a destination, tap Fare Estimate to see the range of fares for your trip”.
He said there will be 1,188 taxis available on New Year’s Eve and that he wouldn’t be surprised if taxis moved more than 20,000 people. The different services have different base prices, but surge at different times.
Surge pricing happens when there’s a high demand for Uber vehicles in a particular area. You might not get home as quickly though.
On days after holidays when demand for Uber is high, sticker-shocked customers complain about their Uber bills.
In light of complaints from angry customers, Uber has begun to pull out all the stops to let its customers know what to expect on nights with high surge pricing.
It’s nice of Uber to do this, but the company shouldn’t have to apologize for surge pricing. Simple really, when you think of it. Basically, you’ll probably need to either head home immediately after the ball drops at Times Square without partaking in the festivities thereafter, or party on till the dawn of New Year’s day to avoid the extra charges.

In addition to planning to ride during non-peak peak times, Uber users can also choose to split their fare among a group to help make surge pricing more affordable. Or you can stick it out, keep partying, and wait a few hours, since Uber expects the worst surges to be between 12:30 and 4 a.m.
