Ball had two interceptions in the game and returned one of them 53 yards for a touchdown before his postgame antics.
Memphis didn’t give up, though.
The Tigers from Alabama had other plans.
The Birmingham Bowl is hardly “home sweet home” for Auburn. After being chased through the backfield by Carl Lawson, Lynch tossed up a pass to the endzone that was batted down by Nick Ruffin.
After a pair of punts, Auburn was back in business with a 30-yard return to the Memphis 44-yard line.
Ball ran off the field giving the middle finger to Auburn’s fans and sideline. Wow, what a game. Memphis lost three of their final four games after beginning the season a ideal 6-0. Devaroe Lawrence was an absolute beast in the middle. The narrative goes like this: An SEC team, having seen its big dreams go bust, arrives at a secondary destination with nothing to play for.
Jeremy Johnson and Auburn found a measure of redemption and, finally, something to celebrate in their season finale.
He threw one pass the whole game. That’s not a joke.
What’s at stake: Auburn is trying to avoid finishing with a losing record two years after making the national championship game.
“He handled himself like a champ”, Malzahn said.
