Former ASH Trojan shows off skills in LSU’s Texas Bowl victory
LSU took a 21-6 lead with 6:41 to go before halftime on a short pass from quarterback Brandon Harris to Fournette, who took it 44 yards for the touchdown. If we’re playing a bowl game in Texas, let it be the Cotton Bowl. “I said, ‘No sir, I’m not”.

The Tiger lead was cut to just 21-20 in the third quarter after one of Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ four touchdown passes, but the game wouldn’t stay that close for long. The Tigers forced Tech into numerous third-and-Mahomes situations, dragging him to the ground on occasion while on others he slipped away like a phantom. LSU virtually eliminated Texas Tech’s running game and sacked Mahomes six times, while forcing him to run for his life on the majority of his completions. “It’s a good front, it’s a good defense, they had a good scheme and they played a good game”.
The Tigers believe their offense was helped by having coordinator Cam Cameron on the sideline instead of up in the booth, where he had been all season.
Texas Tech had already gone through some in-house moves after the regular season, parting ways with multiple defensive assistant coaches.
“I didn’t have to do this, but I made the choice to live in the football stadium”, he said. Texas Tech wound up with 29 rushing yards.
The All-American running back took a screen pass to the house, had five carries of 20+ yards and was the kind of dominant, big-play back that made him the Heisman favorite for two-thirds of the season. Miles and his coaching staff took full advantage of a poor Tech pass defense that allowed 264 yards per game against FBS opponents.
LSU sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris was 8 of 11 for 103 passing yards in the first two quarters. Mahomes led the Red Raiders down the field on a 70-yard drive after Fournette’s score. Defensively, LSU football yields 342.5 yards and 24.0 points per game.
On consecutive drives for LSU, Fournette rushed for touchdowns from 43 yards and 4 yards out.
The Red Raiders would respond later in the quarter.
Fournette pushed LSU’s lead to 35-20 on a 4-yard touchdown run after the interception. Harris’ highlights included a 46-yard strike to sophomore Trey Quinn that set up Fournette’s fourth score.
“[Pat] competed hard”, Kingsbury said.
The Tigers overcame an offensive pass interference penalty and first-and-21 with a 39-yard pass from Harris to Dupre. He celebrated the score with the “running off on the da plug twice” dance from a song by rapper Plies. Patrick Mahomes connected with Jakeem Grant for his second touchdown of the game.
James Butler scored on a 4-yard run with 1:06 left and Nevada benefited from a late gaffe by Colorado State to beat the Rams 28-23 in the inaugural Arizona Bowl Tuesday night.

“They haven’t seen how fast that guy is”, said senior offensive lineman Vadal Alexander. But, given the way this season has gone for the Tigers, you just didn’t know exactly how it would turn out. By the end of the third quarter, Fournette had set a Texas Bowl record for points scored by an individual and finished the day with 30 points scored for the Tigers.
