Israel plans over 55000 new W Bank settler homes

Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian who rammed them with his vehicle in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, the Israeli military said, as a wave of violence approached its fourth month.
Announcements over construction plans in E1 have frequently provoked tensions between Israel, US and Europe in recent years.
According to Peace Now, the housing ministry plans to cover the building of 55,000 new homes, including the creation of two new settlements near Bethlehem and in the Jordan Valley. It comes more than a year after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled a similar plan for the neighborhood following an global outcry.
“The heads of the network, who ran the regional headquarters, were operating to renew Hamas activity in the area and plotting terror activity”, the army said.
The ministry’s plans include moves to retroactively legalize a number of illegal outposts in occupied areas, as well as to create urban continuity between illegal settlements to Jerusalem, the watchdog said. Israel says 88 of them were attacking or attempting to attack Israelis while the rest died in clashes with Israeli troops.
The Palestinians claim the West Bank and east Jerusalem, captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, for an independent state.
The cell is evidence to “an increased effort to exploit the escalation of violence in the West Bank to promote bombings and suicide bombings against targets in Israel and the West Bank”, the Shin Bet said.
An Israeli government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter, stressed the E1 plan is only hypothetical, and no decisions to build have been made.

Numerous plans took place under former Housing Minister Uri Ariel, a strong advocate of the settler movement. Officials speaking anonymously said he kept sensitive information on his personal computer.
