Gaglianone’s 29-yard field goal lifts Badgers over USC
Rafael Gaglianone kicked three field goals, including the game-winning 29-yarder with 2:27 remaining, and the Badgers rallied to beat the Trojans 23-21 in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night.

Grade: As someone who favors defense and sleep on the night before the College Football Playoff semifinals, I was happy to see a pro-style game, even if the multiple reviews in the fourth quarter pushed the game time well beyond the expected 3:30. The initial matchup came at the 1953 Rose Bowl, a contest that, like Wednesday’s, featured more running than passing. However, I also think USC has played a better schedule and stats can be misleading. Joel Stave was the offensive MVP, finishing with an 18-27 mark for 217 yards, a touchdown and no turnovers.
Wisconsin’s Sojourn Shelton intercepted Cody Kessler with 1:44 left.
Cichy was a constant presence in the USC backfield, flushing Kessler from the pocket and forcing poor throws.
“I probably should have just thrown the Hail Mary”, Kessler said. Sarkisian was hired in 2014, but his alcohol-related problems caused athletic director Pat Haden to fire him in October, putting Helton in charge once again. Maybe they could have mentioned to him that fresh legs don’t much matter if you can’t get the ball to your speed guys. “I really believe that this team is going to make some noise next year and a lot of that’s due to Coach Helton”.
Ahead, 20-7, in the third quarter, Wisconsin allowed USC to reach the end zone twice in a three-drive span, the Trojans taking a 21-20 lead with about 10 minutes to play.
But a quick three-and-out by Wisconsin gave the Trojans one final chance for a miracle. After that, USC got the momentum back on their side.
“I think this game kind of summed up our season”, Cichy added.
He said the Badgers noticed that USC was vulnerable to pressure in the “A” gap when pass protecting, and Aranda schemed up blitzes meant to attack that deficiency. “They do a tremendous job”, Helton said.
“We knew what we were going to face – probably not all the coaching changes but we knew we were going to be short in numbers”, he said. On the next play, Corey Clement ran it in from six yards out – a play that was deemed a touchdown upon video review – to open up a two score advantage for the Badgers. But most coaches love to copy success, so if Wisconsin defeats USC at Qualcomm Stadium, Helton will undoubtedly be criticized for not working his team hard enough.
The Trojans immediately answered, Kessler connecting with receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster along the right sideline for a 39-yard gain. The Badgers also were the victim of a poor call by the referees when wildcat quarterback Tanner McEvoy was called out of bounds on a touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
Getting his most extensive work of the season, Clement finished with 66 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries before leaving with a minor left ankle injury. Stave completed all three of his pass attempts on the drive, the latter of which was a 26-yard completion to Traylor that set up a first and goal. The first was for a loss of nine yards, and the next two were for losses of seven yards. The possession’s key play was a one-handed catch by wide receiver Robert Wheelwright for 21 yards.
The Holiday Bowl is always a game that that is exciting and creates great matchups, and the 38th annual edition of the game did just that and ultimately came down to the fourth quarter between the Wisconsin Badgers and the USC Trojans.
The Trojans took a mental detour in order to nominate Wisconsin linebacker Cichy for the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. The Badgers won their second consecutive bowl following a four-game bowl losing streak. That is the longest streak in the Big 10 and seventh-best in the nation….

The win rounded out the Badgers’ season at 10-3.
