‘Welcome back, baby!’ SpaceX launches and lands rocket
It was the company’s first launch since its rocket carrying cargo to the International Space Station exploded June 28. The landing paves the way for potentially reusing rockets for space launches, which SpaceX and other companies hope will dramatically reduce the cost of gaining access to space.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully lands upright at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Orbcomm said in a press release that the satellites were launched successfully into orbit.
Though attempting to land its reusable rocket was only the mission’s secondary objective, the milestone proves next generation space travel can be both significantly cheaper and more environmental than the off-Earth missions of the 20th century.
This animation shows how the Falcon 9 rocket launched, released 11 satellites into orbit, then flipped before landing about six miles from its launch pad.
“Welcome back baby”, Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX tweeted after the rocket safely returned.
From Elon Musk’s twitter page. About two minutes into the flight, the rocket’s first-stage separated cleanly from the second stage and began a controlled descent back to Earth.
To boost the Falcon 9’s chances SpaceX changed the structure of the rocket. and upgraded its landing engine to provide more thrust. SpaceX came back and offered some images and video of just the successful landing.
And it was the first attempt to land its Falcon 9 on an actual launchpad.
After Bezos landed his rocket in November, Musk couldn’t let Blue Origin revel in its own glory.

It aims to resume supply missions to the space station in February. The rocket then re-enters the atmosphere and the goes through an entry burn. Musk explained minutes before the launch how many tweaks were made to account for the previous failures.
