Ward powers Houston past Florida State 38-24 in Peach Bowl
“We had great bowl practices, we practiced hard all the way up and were ready to play”, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said.

“It really doesn’t seem real”, he said.
ATLANTA (AP) Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire is back calling signals in the Peach Bowl after being carted off the field with a lower left leg injury earlier in the game against Houston. And neither has Aguayo, who made 21 of 26 field-goal attempts in his junior season and was named a first-team All-American for a third straight season. Its offense also mustered up enough big plays to keep the game close, but the Seminoles did not have enough firepower to win a contest in which they fell behind by 18 points and turned the ball over five times.
Although the team said his return was questionable, Maguire emerged from the FSU locker room with a heavily-taped left ankle with 9:29 left in the first half. The receiver snuck past Houston’s secondary – which bit on a fake handoff to Cook – and Maguire found him for the easy touchdown.
On defense, cornerback William Jackson III was terrific with 10 tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions, including the one to seal the game.
FSU sophomore RB Dalvin Cook rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in Thursday’s 38-24 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl loss to Houston.
Fisher told an Associated Press reporter that Aguayo was supposed to kick the ball deep in the end zone, but he appeared to top it instead. “He just missed it”. Historically, the Seminoles are fantastic at keeping the ball in bowl games, but that trend has been bucked in the last two seasons, and wouldn’t you know it, the Noles have lost their bowl games the last two years.
Maguire later hit touchdown passes to Travis Rudolph and Jesus Wilson to cut the lead to seven points each time. Cougars quarterback Greg Ward Jr. answered with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Chance Allen, who was left uncovered as Florida State sent safety Jalen Ramsey on a blitz. Maguire then came running back onto the field, hoping to put the ‘Noles into a position to come back.
The speedster from Orlando now has 1,791 kickoff return yards during his career.
Player of the game: Quarterback Greg Ward, Jr. starred for the Houston offense with over 300 total yards, three total touchdowns and an interception.
On Houston’s next possession, Florida State’s Derwin James sacked Ward for a loss of 6 yards on a fourth-and-2 play, stopping the Cougars at the Seminoles 38. These squandered opportunities prevented Florida State from breaking out of the early deficit.
