Syrian refugee resettlement to Canada so far, by the numbers
But Immigration Minister John McCallum says he remains confident that the full 25,000 promised in November will be in Canada by the end of February.

Relatives of Kurdi arrived this week in Canada, where they hope to rebuild their lives.
“I think it is up to Canadians to decide whether this two week delay is a matter of utmost importance, or whether we should instead focus on welcoming these wonderful new Canadians”.
During the 2015 federal election campaign, the Liberals pledged to resettle 25,000 government-sponsored refugees “immediately”.
But the reality of rolling out that promise has proven it takes more than that and the Liberals have amended their plan several times.
There is no evidence that these refugees are any less deserving of the government’s timely and selective generosity. And so one thing I can say with certainty is that our fundamental target will be hit, that is to say well before the end of February, 25,000 Syrian refugees will have landed in Canada as permanent residents.
McCallum announced that the government will have processed 10,700 refugees through “all screening stages by close of business today”, but that only 6,000 will be on Canadian soil.
“Where we were doing only 600 medical exams a week, we boosted levels to 800 a day”, he said.
As of December 28, the last date for which Citizenship and Immigration Canada has provided numbers, 3,701 refugees had touched down in Canada. “We can not begrudge them of those few days”.
“Rarely do we mobilize in this fashion, to bring in such a huge influx of refugees”, McCallum said.
“This is something that we will look back at and not be talking about the timelines a decade from now but be talking about the awesome new Syrian Canadians who have become part of our community”, she said.
This week’s monster snowstorm, which hit large sections of Southern Ontario and Quebec on Tuesday, may have caused delays or cancellations of government flights.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected to a surprise majority in October, promising to accept more refugees more quickly than the ousted Conservatives.

“My conclusion is not to apologize for anything, but to congratulate the public servants for a fantastic job”, he added, touting the “major logistical and humanitarian effort” that saw the government increase its processing capacity 10-fold.
