‘Pandemonium’ as Britons flee Dubai’s New Year’s Eve skyscraper inferno
In Australia, simultaneous fireworks displays erupted along Sydney’s famed harbour, where people crowded onto balconies, into waterside parks and onto boats as they jockeyed for the best view, clinking glasses and whooping with joy as the first pyrotechnics exploded.

Meanwhile China held an official New Year’s Eve celebration near Beijing’s Forbidden City.
Hundreds of thousands of people massed around Sydney’s harbour to see off 2015, with some people camping out days in advance to secure a good spot.
Sydney’s firework extravaganza to welcome in 2016 is to be the city’s biggest ever with more than a million people packing the harbour foreshores as more than 100 000 pyrotechnic effects light up the midnight sky.
Parts of Australia follow New Zealand and Samoa in welcoming in the new year.
The municipality of Brussels announced yesterday the abolition of all the celebrations and fireworks displays planned on New Year’s Eve due to threats of attacks.
As for what people can expect, Hamilton said it depends on how much they are willing to spend.
“I do feel suspicious of when a fire breaks out on New Year’s Eve”, he said.
“I would like to wish everybody on our handsome planet earth a very fun New Year’s Eve and happy, healthy 2016”.
“After what our city has lived through, we have to send a signal to the world”, she told the weekly Journal du Dimanche. Fireworks also will be on display in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the country of seven emirates.
Police say more officers will be on hand this year than the 1,600 deployed for last year’s bash. In addition, Paris cancelled official firework shows and forbid the public from using them.
Many braved the intermittent spells of rain in London awaiting a midnight display featuring about 12,000 fireworks that produced 50,000 projectiles.
The decision came one day after authorities arrested two men in connection with an alleged plot to unleash holiday season attacks against police, soldiers and popular locations in Brussels.
“The people of Paris and France need this symbolic passage into the New Year”, said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Mayor Yvan Mayeur said it would be impossible to screen the thousands of revelers who would otherwise be gathering in Brussels to ring in the new year.

This year’s festivities will also be attended by almost 6,000 New York City police officers, including members of a new specialized counterterrorism unit.
