York flood victims’ homes targeted by looters
The Environment Agency said it was forced to lift the Foss flood barrier after water entered the building, putting pumps in danger of failing due to electrical problems.

Visiting areas hit by the floods, Prime Minister David Cameron said the government would commit funds to flood defences between now and 2020.
Heavy rain is forecast for Northern England on Wednesday and with the ground still saturated and river levels at record highs, there is the potential for further significant flooding especially in Cumbria. Student areas now issued with a severe warning are Osbaldwick and Tang Hall.
The spokeswoman said: “Partners and emergency services are working round the clock in York to tackle unprecedented levels of flooding in the city”.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in Lancashire and Calderdale, West Yorkshire, as soldiers were drafted in to help with the flooding.
Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts remain in place in parts of England and Wales. The River Ouse peaked at over 5 metres above its typical level, while the River Foss has hit record heights. Rising river levels also threatened downtown Manchester and police dealt with a ruptured gas main and small fire believed to have been caused by the flooding. We are familiar with the overflowing River Ouse in the Winter but this time the River Foss could overflow as its barrier is unable to cope with such a large influx of water.
Following the meeting Mr Sturdy said “The Environment Secretary has assured me that more funding will be made available to help get York residents and businesses back on their feet as quickly as possible”.
“We’re still in a situation with major flood warnings, people need to look at the latest advice from the Environment Agency, from the emergency services”.

The Department for Environment said the additional personnel would be deployed today while another 1,500 would be put on standby in Yorkshire. That’s really important because in many places we have not yet reached the high point. I don’t feel too anxious because we are higher up and I’d rather that people in need were rescued.
