Clemson advances to the national title game, dominates Oklahoma in second half

Clemson will attempt to claim its second national title and become Division I college football’s first-ever 15-0 team January 11 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. during the College Football Playoff national championship against tonight’s Cotton Bowl victor between No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Michigan State.

Clemson, a team once known for such inexplicable stumbles that a derisive term was coined for it, is headed to the national championship game with a still-perfect record after a 37-17 smackdown of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Thursday.

The Sooners reached Clemson territory three times in the second half, and the Tigers’ defense responded with one fourth-down stop and a pair of interceptions to keep OU from getting close.

Clemson went into the locker room at halftime trailing No. 4 Oklahoma by one after a red-zone interception late in the half and several other points left on the field.

Clemson punter Andy Teasdall rolled right as if he was punting one rugby-style, then deciding to throw back across the field to defensive tackle Christian Wilkins for a 31-yard gain.

Clemson scored two plays later for a 10-7 lead.

Oklahoma was out-gained by 227 yards after that drive.

Clemson tacked on seven more points to open the fourth quarter, capping a nine-play touchdown drive – all runs – with another Gillman scoring rush to give the Tigers a 20-point lead. – Oklahoma RB Samaje Perine ran 15 times for 58 yards and a score. Oklahoma returns too much talent on both sides of the ball to not be a contender for the Big 12 again, along with Baylor and TCU, and with Mayfield back they should be able to weather the storm with young receivers. “Coach Swinney wasn’t because he’s a believer and he’s the reason that we’re here”.

Watson certainly lived up to the hype of being a Heisman finalist, accounting for 332 yards and earning the offensive MVP award. Clemson rushed for 312 yards and passed for 218. The Sooners took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards in 10 plays.

Unlike Clemson, Oklahoma has lost a game. “So yeah, that makes you pull your hair out as a coach, but the positive is we don’t have to play ideal to win”. Watson’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow stretched the Tigers’ lead.

Now it’s on to Arizona for Clemson, which is one win away from its second national title.
