She said: ‘We have never had to worry about flooding because the barrier was there to protect these homes.

Prime Minister Cameron called the floods “unprecedented” and promised that more troops would be deployed “to do whatever is needed” in areas stricken by floods.
“Urgent repairs are planned to the Foss barrier in York this morning with parts being airlifted onto the site to carry out repairs to the pumps”, U.K. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said in a statement on Monday.
The River Aire, in Leeds, was predicted by the EA to have reached “record levels” at 11pm on Saturday night, with nine severe flood warnings in place. The highest level of flood warnings were also issued for properties near Tang Hall Beck and Osbaldwick Beck, which also burst their banks.
“Half of York is underwater”.
Britain’s Environment Agency has said water had entered the Foss Barrier’s building, putting pumps in danger of failing due to electrical problems.
Many residential streets and homes along the Foss in the city centre and to suburbs and outlying villages were hit and throughout yesterday residents were warned to prepare by moving belongings upstairs and be prepared for power cuts.
We of course owe a debt of gratitude to all the staff and volunteers from the City of York Council, the emergency services, Environment Agency, armed forces and voluntary organisations, for the hard work they have put in (and continue to do with the clean up) to try to minimise the impact of the floods and assist those affected.
Heavy rain is forecast for Northern England on Wednesday and with the ground still saturated and river levels at record highs, there is the potential for further significant flooding especially in Cumbria.
Around 4,000 soldiers are now in Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Linda Horsman, 64, who owns two flats in the flood zone with husband Paul, 68, said of the barrier failure: ‘It’s stupid and it makes me very angry.
“We got the automated alert but we’ve had automated alerts ever since we moved here 10 years ago, and not a trickle of water on any occasion”, he said.
