Pregnant elephant seal stops traffic
Wildlife officials think the 500-pound mammal was confused and lost when it repeatedly tried to cross a Northern California highway, causing traffic backups, The Associated Press reported.

Earlier, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay says he got a face-full of hot breath and saliva while trying corral this extremely irritated mammal.
Now, they are hoping to get the stubborn seal out of the water, sedate her on land and relocate her somewhere safe, according to center spokesman Giancarlo Rulli.
“Elephant seals are big, large and in charge”, said Shawn Johnson, a veterinarian for the Marin Headlands-based mammal center.
“All they’re doing is creating a traffic nightmare”, the CHP officer said.
Workers from the centre are now planning to try and use kayak and bullhorns to yell at the seal in an attempt to scare it back into open water.
The mammal center and the San Pablo Bay National Marine Sanctuary dispatched rescue teams.
Many people were curious though as to why the Highway Patrol would not simply let the seal cross the road. “She pretty much does what she wants”, Barbie Halaska, a research assistant at the mammal centre, was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle as saying.
The elephant seal is an adult female, weighing up to 1000 pounds, according to marine life experts. And for the second day in a row, she’s very determined.
“She’s a lovely animal who appears to be in flawless health”, she explained.
One possibility for the crossing attempts is that she is pregnant and trying to find a place to give birth, but Halaska said there is no way to confirm that short of an ultrasound.

Rulli said because of the possibility of pregnancy, wildlife officials are taking extra precautions with the seal and being “extra gentle”. “We’re not quite sure why she’s up here, she should be outside on the ocean side in the Point Reyes or Ano Nuevo areas”.
