Clemson Advances to College Football Playoff Championship Game
Lest we forget, the College Football Playoff semifinals go down tomorrow, with Oklahoma and Clemson getting us started at 4:00 PM Eastern, followed by Michigan State and Alabama at 8:00 PM Eastern. There’s a lot of ad dollars in play for marketers and for both ESPN and ABC. I mean, New Year’s Eve.

Unless New Year’s Eve falls on a weekend, the first of the national semifinals in the foreseeable future will be played while some people are still at work. Last year ESPN’s one wild card playoff telecast drew 21.7 million viewers, so a unit in that game would be good compensation for marketers.
“We’re certainly going to experience the game, see the stadium in operation – for me the first time with a sold-out crowd (66,524 with seats added in all four corners), so there is a technical aspect to it. But it’s not time to audition”.
Earlier this year, ESPN lobbied the College Football Playoff to move the semifinal games to Saturday, Jan. 2, but Magnus said there just wasn’t enough time to move the games. Eventually, the four-team tournament will become an eight-team fest, with three rounds needed to crown college football’s kingpin.
ESPN wants to dominate New Year’s Eve, much as the N.F.L. takes over Thanksgiving Day and the N.B.A. deploys five games in its bid to wrest control of Christmas from Santa Claus.
It’s a New Years Day staple.
“If we win this game”, Harbaugh said Thursday. “We want to create a collegiate feel about the game so that when people leave the event, they knew that they were attending a college football game”. The only games that matter now are the two semifinals and the national championship game.
New Year’s Eve finds people stocking up on champagne and confetti and figuring out where they’ll watch the Times Square ball drop. It’s expensive to buy ads for these games, and the games being on New Year’s Eve could give them pause, especially if the audience is going to be split. But in case you’re not sure if you want to watch – or if this is the first you’re hearing about the games – then ESPN and Lego have a special message for you.
The 2 annual College Football Playoff kicks off at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, when the Oklahoma Sooners face the Clemson Tigers in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Something’s amiss when you compare a bowl that was once sponsored by Weed Eater and is played in Shreveport with a game played in Jerry Jones’ palace in Arlington, Texas.
However, one buyer says another reason for the sellouts can be attributed to multi-year deals for the CFP games. They’ll be ready this year. Both Michigan State and Alabama feature physical, run-heavy defenses, but sheer size is why Alabama is pretty good at stopping the run, too.
Sports columnists around the country have not held back in their criticism of the NCAA for its handling of the situation and its insistence that the two games be played on New Year’s Eve instead of moving them to another night.
You can play it close to the vest like Alabama this season, though even Saban has used no-huddle tempo in recent years.
That’s a tough task, but an achievable one, if university presidents can wrestle college football away from the conference commissioners and business interests that have controlled it for decades.
Timing, the saying goes, is everything. “The public is accepting it – they like it better than the (Bowl Championship Series)”. That’s just what the Spartans did when they corralled Ezekiel Elliott of Ohio State during the most important game of the season. If you are ESPN, it’s promotion, promotion, promotion.
