WHO’S LAUGHING NOW? Star Wars creator George Lucas, left, turned out his baby to the franchise’s new director, J.J. Abrams, and the results have been record-breaking.
The Force Awakens has taken an estimated $517m (£347m) globally in three days.
The movie is now open in all markets except Greece and India, where it starts playing December 24, and China, which has set a January 9 debut.
That surpassed the previous opening-day record of $43.5 million for the final “Harry Potter” movie in 2011. Which means that its looking more and more likely that Star Wars Episode VII will break the record for highest grossing opening weekend of all time, which was just broken this year by Jurassic World at $208 million.
The Two previous movies to open above $200 million have had good enough holds to reach $600 million at the box office. Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Thursday night box office has beaten a record previously owned by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.
“The Force Awakens” is set 30 years after the events of 1983’s “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”.
So far the film has made $517 million around the world since opening overseas on Wednesday. The release of the first Star Wars movie under the Disney banner has alleviated those doubts.
The film is being screened in 4,134 theatres in North America, a record for a December opening.
Some analysts believe it could become the top-grossing film of all time, beating the $2.8bn (£1.9bn) taken by James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar.
“They tailored the campaign to every geography around the world, and did it in a way that still preserved some of the mystery of the film while not leaving a single stone unturned”.

Abrams, the movie stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow.
