As details about the LeGrier shooting emerged, Emanuel said there were “serious questions” about what happened and ordered changes in how city police officers are trained to handle calls involving people who may have mental health problems.

“There’s a difference between whether someone can use a gun, and when they should use a gun, and we as a city must train for that difference”, Emanuel said Wednesday. McDonald was shot in the middle of a Chicago street after police saw him carrying a knife.

He said police must learn when they can use a gun and when not to do so.

This week, sources in the department told the Chicago Tribune the officer did not see Jones standing behind Quintonio LeGrier, who was coming out the front door of a West Side house with a metal baseball bat in hand.

John Escalante on Wednesday are slated to announce a “‘de-escalation” approach to handling potential conflicts and standoffs, including making sure every “operational’ on-duty officer is equipped with a Taser, ” reports The Chicago Sun-Times.
