Alabama took control of the game in the third quarter, driving 75 yards on nine plays on its opening possession. Shades of the way Ohio State shaved the Tide’s edge to a point at that juncture previous year. Just 1:04 later, Coker and Ridley connected on a 50-yard touchdown bomb to move the Tide to a 31-0 lead with 2:20 left in the third period.

The game within the game, Alabama coach Nick Saban again defeated his former assistant, Spartans coach Mark Dantonio.

The Spartans may have a defense that ranks ninth against the rush and fourth overall, but Alabama has the nation’s No. 1 rush defense and was second in total defense behind only Boston College.
