A massive fire in Dubai did not stop New Year’s fireworks
Authorities said that the New Year’s Eve celebrations in downtown Dubai would not be cancelled, despite the heavy smoke covering the zone, where now ambulances and helicopters are operating. (AP Photo/Jon Gambrell) A picture taken on December 31, 2015 shows people watching the Address Downtown hotel burning after huge fire ripped through the luxury hotel near the world’s tallest tower, in Dubai.

Internal fire-fighting systems were “preventing the spread of fire inside the hotel”, it said.
Twitter user Faizan Jamal wrote: “Free everything at Dubai Silicon Oasis”.
One person suffered heart attack due to over-crowding and smoke at the fire site.
A 63-storey skyscraper in downtown Dubai engulfed by fire on Thursday night has been evacuated and the blaze is 90 per cent under control, authorities in the Gulf emirate have said.
“The problem is millions of people inside the Burj Khalifa can not move anywhere because we (are) kind of waiting for the fireworks display”, a witness told the television station. It was not clear what caused the blasts.
The ironically named Dubai Marina Torch, which is even taller, at 79 floors, than the Address Hotel, burned almost two years ago.
The blaze erupted near the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, where crowds had gathered to watch the fireworks display. They said 1.6 tonnes of fireworks would be used in the display.
The blaze reportedly started on a 20th floor terrace, although other accounts have the fire starting on the ground floor.
After the fireworks display, Girlie Omilda, a Filipina who works in the aviation industry in Dubai, said she was glad to have seen the fireworks, even as the tower continued to burn.
An American citizen, Margaret Besheer, who is on vacation in Dubai told MSNBC that she was eating on a balcony above where the blaze began. The media office gave no further explanation as to how the fire started.

It is not yet clear where evacuees from the New Year’s fire will be housed, and the fire remains under investigation.
