The mayor’s fireworks display was ticketed for the second year and has sold out.
The property that was searched in Rue Delaunoy, Molenbeek, was raided three days after the attacks that killed 130 people, by police searching for fugitive Belgian-born suspect Salah Abdeslam, whose brother Brahim was one of the suicide bombers.
The French capital also remains on high alert and has abandoned its fireworks display on the Champs-Elysees, although the traditional gathering on the famous boulevard will go ahead under tight security. However, Belgian authorities canceled the tradition in the capital city of Brussels on Wednesday based on fears of an attack.
Revelers, many of them young women, were trampled to death last New Year’s Eve after flocking to the historic riverfront, known as the Bund, which is a popular tourist destination.
Britain deployed around 3,000 officers across central London in a reportedly unprecedented security effort, while in Italy, fireworks were banned in towns and cities due to fears that the loud explosions could spark panic.
The 25-year-old American armed himself with two knives, a machete, duct tape, zip ties and ski masks to carry out an attack on Thursday on an unnamed Rochester restaurant, court documents released by U.S. authorities revealed.
After Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa, the chimes of midnight will finally move across the Americas.
A source close to the investigation told AFP that officials were trying to determine whether members of a motorcycle gang called the “Kamikaze Riders” were involved in the year-end plot. The terrorists, all Islamic, had planned to carry out attacks during the New Year’s party in the country’s capital, Brussels.
Computer equipment, mobile phones, and propaganda material from the Islamic State, were seized earlier this week when police raided their homes.
Sydney has already welcomed in 2016 amid security concerns. It said no further details would be made public, and that the investigation was continuing. However, a million-plus crowd watched the famous fireworks display from the Harbor Bridge and Opera House without any reported incident.
