Throngs usher in 2016 at bash in New York’s Times Square
Despite a year of global unrest and terror threats leading up to New Year’s Eve, roughly a million people are expected to pack Times Square to watch the ball drop.

Partygoers from around the world had waited hours at the famed Manhattan crossroads – some since before dawn – for the countdown.
Almost 6,000 police officers will patrol Times Square, some in civilian clothes and many heavily armed.
If you are going to be near a television on New Year’s Eve, the festivities will be broadcast on ABC and NBC.

Kissing at midnight is a New year’s tradition, one which hundreds of thousands of revelers in Times Square uphold. Serious security:Some in the crowd admitted to being nervous to gather in such a famous location in the weeks after the Paris and San Bernardino attacks.
About 700,000 people are expected to turn out for the 127th Rose Parade.
Made of iron and wood, the first New Year’s Eve ball to be dropped from the flagpole at One Times Square in 1907 weighed 700 pounds.
It’s nearly like they have their own crystal ball – and they’re watching Times Square with it.
Those hoping to get into Times Square for the live event will be happy to know the festivities will not require a ticket and will be absolutely free to attend.
And to welcome the new millennium, the crystal ball was created.
In Auckland, an impressive fireworks display lit up around the Sky Tower.
“I always wanted to come here, but never took the chance”, said James Gomez, 39, of New Haven, Connecticut, as he surveyed the area with friends looking for a prime viewing spot.
Gomez came to Times Square even though he said he was concerned about the area being targeted in an attack. “I’m scared”, he said.

In the hours before midnight, revelers like Gomez and his friends can listen to musicians such as Carrie Underwood and Jessie J performing on multiple stages set up in the area. The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment actually do a trial run of the confetti a couple of days before New Year’s Eve. She will be joined by Maggie Rulli, Andrea Boehlke and Jeremy Hassell, who return for their third New Year’s Eve webcast.
