Alabama defeats Michigan State at Cotton Bowl
Neither of these teams has gone into halftime of a game this season without scoring.

(Arlington) – Alabama’s defense pitched a shutout and quarterback Jake Coker passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns as the Crimson Tide routed Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl on Thursday evening. Yeldon received a combined 23 carries. The victory earned offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin a chance to coach in a title game for the first time since the 2005 season, when USC lost to Texas in the BCS final at the Rose Bowl.
Clemson (14-0) showed the sort of balance it will need to cope with Alabama’s stifling defense, rushing for 312 yards and passing for 218.
Alabama wasn’t ignoring Henry intentionally.
Clemson won the first two games it played against Alabama – in 1904 and 1905.
“So Jake reads what’s the box”, Saban said. “People have to actually kind of pull him back from working so hard; they don’t want to burn him out at such a young age”.
Clemson, a team once known for such inexplicable stumbles that a derisive term (“Clemsoning”) was coined for it, is headed to the title game with a still-perfect record, 14-0. He made a spectacular touchdown catch on a fade route that was initially ruled incomplete but overturned when replay showed conclusively that he managed to get a foot down with possession.
Allen had two of Alabama’s four sacks as the Crimson Tide defense pressured Spartans quarterback Connor Cook the entire evening. Both players have similar body types, incredible work ethics and attack the position with the same aggression. “They’re undefeated. They’ve got a great program, so I’m sure our guys are going to be motivated to play the best they can”. “I think the biggest thing I’ll look back on is the relationships”. The first play of the drive was a 26-yard gainer, and Coker capped it with a toss to the end zone that was hauled in by Ridley, who caught the pass around the arm of a Michigan State defender. He completed 25 of 30 passes and didn’t just excel in the short passing game. Watson, who was named the game’s offensive MVP, passed for one touchdown and ran for another.
Henry limited in the first half, but when the Tide needed that final yard following a 50-yard pass from Coker to Ridley, Henry plunged into the end zone on his second attempt for the only touchdown of the first half. But he wasn’t the Tide’s only threat down the field. “First time all year that that’s happened to us”.
Not only was Coker making the right decisions within the Alabama offense, he was making the right throws. But he wilted under the pressure of Alabama’s 11-deep defensive line, getting sacked four times and finishing 19 of 39 for 210 yards with two interceptions in just his fifth career loss.
After the play, the referee picked up the flag and said there was no roughing the passer since McDowell hit Coker in the chest.

Coker has perhaps been underappreciated in 2015. The defense did the rest, shutting down Baker Mayfield and a Sooners offense that was averaging 52 points over its previous seven games. The Spartans had -9 yards rushing. Then he started running Henry more in the second quarter. The Mobile, Ala. native who transferred from Florida State in 2014 guaranteed himself one more college game. “So we knew we would have the throw the bubbles and the smokes and the outside perimeter stuff and try to get a block on the perimeter to be able to move the ball effectively”. “If they’re going to drag the ball to him and then play-action it, the No. 2 receiver is going to not get rerouted sometimes”.
