Tigers headed to national title game
Clemson cornerback Cordrea Tankersley (25) tackles Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook (11), during the first half of the Orange Bowl NCAA college football semifinal playoff game, Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

With his third carry of the game – a six-yard gain – sophomore running back Wayne Gallman became Clemson’s all-time single-season rushing leader, passing Raymond Priester, who set the standard of 1,345 yards in 1996.
The Tigers’ performance should alter how many view a pairing with either Alabama or Michigan State to decide the national championship – especially should the Tigers face the Crimson Tide.
University of Oklahoma football fans stand with Clemson fans Thursday during the fourth quarter of the College Football Playoff Semifinal game at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The Sooners entered the game as one of the most balanced teams in the nation, but their running game was rendered nearly non-existent as Clemson’s long, big-bodied defensive linemen collapsed their rushing lanes and pushed Oklahoma’s blockers into the back field.
No. 1 Clemson dominated No. 4 Oklahoma in the second half of Thursday’s Orange Bowl en route to a 37-17 win.
Heck, quarterback Baker Mayfield was peeved because ESPN broadcasters were “disrespectful” toward the Sooners and called them “the JV team” in last year’s bowl game, and he didn’t even play in the 40-6 rout.
The top-ranked Clemson Tigers are undefeated, and they’ve even beaten the law of averages. Despite losing All-American defensive end Shaq Lawson to a knee injury in the first quarter, the Tigers sacked Mayfield five times, intercepted him twice and rendered his running ability a non-factor. But then [Wayne] Gallman hurts us in the second half with missed tackles, or again, him making us miss them.
“We’re not anxious about who we play”, said linebacker Ben Boulware, named the defensive MVP. It’s the will. People with the biggest will are going to win the game, and they seemed to just have that edge and that will about them in the second half, and we didn’t.
Clemson has a 3-2 record against Oklahoma and is now the only school in the FBS with a winning record against Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
Clemson, which is 7-7 against SEC teams under Swinney, also looks like a team that can physically match up with Alabama at the line of scrimmage and is decidedly superior at several positions, most critically at quarterback.
THE DECIDING PLAY: Trailing 23-17 in the third quarter, the Sooners drove into Clemson territory.
“It’s been 34 years since Clemson had a chance to win a national championship”, Swinney said.
The Cotton Bowl is still eight minutes of game time from being finished, but it’s clear that Alabama is going to emerge victorious.
Watson did not have his best passing night, completing 16 of 31 passes for 187 yards with a touchdown and a misguided interception in the red zone at the end of the first half. They got the best of us tonight. Last month Teasdall was publicly berated by coach Dabo Swinney on the sideline when he attempted a fake punt without telling the coaches against North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.
Watson is “the best player in the country, it’s that simple”, Swinney said later. The play went for 31 yards, setting up a touchdown two plays later to give Clemson the lead.
Tigers won their 20th bowl game in history today. The big tailback was just a role player against a Spartans defense stacked to stop the run. The refs didn’t cost OU this game, nor did they have any kind of impact on the outcome. The second quarter followed a similar path until Jake Coker hit Calvin Ridley for a 50-yard pass.
The Sooners scored a touchdown, retaking the lead 17-16.
