Memphis player tackles Auburn equipment manager, takes ball following Birmingham Bowl
Asked if it was the best defensive performance in his three seasons as Auburn’s head coach, Gus Malzahn said it was.

Ball had two interceptions in the 31-10 loss and returned his second pick for a touchdown in the second quarter, but he didn’t get away with one of Auburn’s eight game balls. He ran 17 yards on his second play from scrimmage and opened the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run. The offense produced 402 yards on 71 plays, while special team highlights included a blocked field goal and a 56-yard punt return by Marcus Davis to set up the final touchdown. Robinson had 121 of those yards on 25 carries.
If Johnson can continue to run the ball with that kind of effectiveness then maybe he has a shot at being the quarterback next year, but there is still no answer as to who will be the Auburn starting quarterback in 2016.

Stat of the Game: Memphis, one of the top passing teams in the country, averaged just 2.9 yards per pass play while completing just 16 of 37 throws.
When Malzahn replaced Sean White (who had already thrown two interceptions) at quarterback with the turn0ver-prone Jeremy Johnson, it nearly looked like a last-gasp effort.
For the first time since the first half of the Louisville game to start the season the Auburn defense was healthy. That put the Tigers up 10-0 at the 1:58 mark of the first quarter.
Winztell’s restaurant in Greenville was full of Auburn fans coming by to have lunch with friends and watch the Birmingham Bowl.
