The world’s second-largest movie market with roughly 30,000 screens – the USA has roughly 40,000 – delivered almost $100 million of the $315 million worldwide haul that “Jurassic World” managed in its opening weekend overseas this summer.
The highly anticipated Force Awakens has blazed a record-setting trail since its domestic debut Thursday, breaking the record for highest-grossing domestic opening night with US$57 million and biggest single-day sales on Friday with US$120.5 million. Anything is possible but the next pin to knock down is Jurassic World’s $208 opening weekend record – a figure that Star Wars was nearly halfway towards thanks to advanced tickets. Scalpers sold tickets to prime showtimes, parents weaned on the “Star Wars” saga took their children to introduce a new generation to the epic push-and-pull between the Dark Side and the Light, and theaters were forced to clarify their costume policy, with many chains outlawing masks and blasters.
Fans of the series reveled in the chance to revisit the “Star Wars” galaxy at the weekend.
The movie has opened in 44 countries outside North America, earning $72.7 million in total through Thursday.
At the White House, a beeping R2-D2 and two Stormtroopers surprised reporters with a quick appearance in the briefing room. Disney bought “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and spent more than $200 million to produce “Force Awakens”.
The film has also set a new opening night box office record in the USA and Canada.
“‘The Force Awakens is a genuine cultural phenomenon”, said Fandango President Paul Yanover in a statement.
A few, courageous films debuted against the “Star Wars” juggernaut.
“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience”, Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios said in a statement Sunday.

Nostalgia, plus a carefully planned, months-long release of film trailers and character profiles boosted interest. Whether “The Force Awakens” can come close to the global hauls of those films ($2.8 billion for “Avatar” and $2.2 billion for “Titanic”) won’t be clear for weeks.
