Dasukigate: Former National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President of Nigeria, Saambo Dasuki’s arrest for allegedly stealing $2bn and accused of awarding phantom contracts to buy 12 helicopters, four fighter jets, and ammunition meant for the Nigeria’s military campaign against Boko Haram Islamist militants. Boko Haram has since reverted to a strategy of hitting soft targets such as markets, bus stations and places of worship, as well as hit-and-run attacks on villages, mainly in Borno state.
The governor, who commiserated with the government and people of Borno and Adamawa States, especially those who lost loved ones in the attacks, said: “In other countries of the world, the government would have taken responsibility for deceiving and misleading the people and apologised”. Even as government troops engaged them, a woman ran into the area yelling “Boko Haram, Boko Haram”, and detonated herself, according to a Guardian report citing the village head, Bulama Isa.
Also in Maiduguri, a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a checkpoint.
A spokesman, Col Mustapha Anka, said that during the attack on Dawari, which is on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the security forces had intervened and killed 10 suicide bombers. Multiple suicide bombings, grenade attacks, and a shoot-out killed at least 50 people and hurt at least 100, many of them women and children.
He said the Nigerian army has “decapitated” the Boko Haram body.
However, he urged the governments of Nigeria and other affected countries to begin an urgent probe into the awful attacks, restating the country’s commitment to helping Nigeria and its neighbors counter Boko Haram’s senseless acts of terror.
While Nigeria’s military has won back territory from the group in recent months, Boko Haram has expanded its network in neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
“The term defeat would suggest that the Nigerian government has effectively curtailed the threat Boko Haram poses, which is clearly not the case”.
Tackling Boko Haram involves reducing the region’s chronic poverty and building an education system which gains the support of local muslims – measures which are not being given priority by anyone in Nigeria or outside.

From killing and abducting more people to attacking military bases, from carrying out blasts in the Nigerian capital Abuja to spreading to neighboring Chad, Cameroon and Niger, the group has made strong statements it is unwavering in its goal of establishing an Islamic State.
