CDC Investigating More E.COLI Affected Patients Related to Chipotle, Shares Plunge
The Chipotle founder said that he had to say he was sorry for the people that had gotten sick because they were having a tough time. All five individuals said they ate at a Chipotle the week before they got sick.

In the larger outbreak, the CDC said one more ill person has been reported from Pennsylvania since its last update, bringing the total cases to 53 in nine states.
“Chipotle’s food safety issues seem to have exposed deficiencies in the chain’s supply testing protocol, particularly as it – like Yum China – manages hundreds of small suppliers”, David Palmer of RBC Capital Markets said in a December 7 report.
The FDA said on Tuesday the evidence available suggests that a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle’s restaurants in several states is a likely source of both the outbreaks. Taylor Farms officials cited that report as the all clear for their products even though FDA officials said there could have been undetected pathogens in the fresh-cut mix.
“We are in the process of implementing reassessed programs including high-resolution testing of ingredients”, Chipotle said in an emailed statement on Monday. Earlier this month Chipotle CEO and founder Steve Ells went on national TV to apologize for the recent spate of illnesses and vowed to make the company’s restaurants the safest places to eat by going above and beyond the industry’s best practices for food safety. The company has estimated that sales will fall as much as 11 percent in the fourth quarter as the illnesses bring attention to the company’s food-safety struggles.
Still, Marler noted the Chipotle cases pale in comparison to an E. coli outbreak in 1993 tied to Jack in the Box that sickened hundreds and led to four deaths.
The CDC also said that out of 19 people that were reported ill with the E. coli infection, five of them were hospitalised and two of them developed a certain kind of kidney failure that is linked with a particular E. coli strain. The cause of the E. coli contagion still hasn’t been found.
On Dec. 10, a Chipotle restaurant South Lake Union branch was closed by Seattle health officials for repeated food safety protocol deviations.
Chipotle’s stock price fell to a 52-week low Monday following the news before recovering slightly.
