Firefighting teams managed to control 80 percent of the fire by 10.30 p.m.to ensure the New Year party continued.
Filipino photographer Dennis Borja Mallari kept praying while waiting for rescuers to pluck him out from the 48th floor balcony of The Address Hotel, Dubai’s prestigious hotel-residential building being engulfed by fire as fireworks lit up the sky to mark the beginning of the New Year.
Many were undeterred by the fire, with tens of thousands of people staying to watch the nearby fireworks show – which went on.
Major General Rashed al-Matrushi, general director of the Dubai Civil Defence, told the the pan-Arab television channel Al Arabiya: ‘There are no injuries, thank God’.
At least 14 people were slightly injured, one was moderately injured and one person suffered a heart attack during the evacuation, the government said.
The hotel towers over the Souq Al Bahar, a popular shopping area with walkways that connect to the Burj Khalifa and the Middle East’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall.
A firefighter at the scene of the Address Hotel fire in Dubai on New Years Eve is the son of the ruler of Dubai, it has emerged.
Man who escaped the hotel Kenneth Flynn said, “The heat was so intense outside, it was unbelievable and just people started to panic – crushing each other trying to go downstairs and jumping over railings”. They said the fire appears to have originated on a 20th floor terrace. A half hour later, he was able to get the attention of rescue workers and was safely evacuated. Fireworks were also set off in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the country of seven emirates.
The huge blaze at The Address Downtown hotel erupted around 9pm on Thursday (1am on Friday, Singapore time) on Thursday, sparking panic but no reports of serious injuries.
A fire that broke out on New Year’s Eve at a Dubai luxury hotel was burning well into New Year’s Day Friday as officials remained tight-lipped about a possible cause of the blaze.
“Then suddenly you saw people screaming and running”, she said.
“We were near The Address Hotel when someone shouted at us that there is a big fire in the hotel”.
