The fire engulfed one side of the 63-storey building but there were only minor injuries reported. To manage the crowds, Dubai police closed off some roads and the metro before the fire broke out.

“I think I was the only person left stuck that long”, he said, describing how he was led out through the smoke-filled corridors of the five-star hotel.
“I am not going to see the fireworks display at Burj Khalifa anymore”, he pledged.
The cause is being investigated, but early reports have said the blaze began when some room curtains on the 20th floor caught fire.
Four fire brigade teams were at the site.
The BBC’s Marcus George in Dubai says streets around the Address Downtown Hotel have been cordoned off, but boulevards around the Burj Khalifa are open.
The Address Hotel, near the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, went up in flames hours before the city’s famous fireworks display. “I’m excited because it’s New Year, and (filled with) an adrenaline rush”, he told AFP, his voice still shaky.
Downtown Dubai set off a massive fireworks display Thursday night despite the blaze, launching fireworks from buildings all over the area.
At about 11 p.m. local time officials said 90 per cent of the fire was under control, and would be fully controlled within half an hour.
Officials said the fire erupted on the 20th floor of The Address hotel, perhaps outside on a terrace, causing the flames to quickly climb up the length of the structure.
Hotel guest Kenneth Flynn told Sky News he was having a drink with his girlfriend when she “noticed something falling from the building”.
“This is where the search begins”, Khalfan wrote of the picture, which appeared to show a lower part of the building.
In February, a similar blaze spread along the external cladding of Dubai’s 86-story Torch tower, one of the world’s tallest residential buildings.
In 2012, the 34-storey Tamweel tower suffered serious damage after a cigarette butt started a fire.

A video circulating on social media showed anxious shoppers at the huge nearby Dubai Mall as they rushed to get out, with a woman shouting: “Folks don’t run… don’t panic”. Among them was Chris Browne, a tourist from London, who watched with her husband, Stephen, standing behind her. They said they hoped no one was injured.
