Alabama, Clemson to clash for title after semifinal wins
Alabama’s defense did Clemson’s one-half better, shutting out Michigan State as the Crimson Tide cruised to a 38-0 victory. It’s not the sexiest concept, but it has become the Alabama Way – and that way has led the Crimson Tide to within a game of a fourth national championship under Saban.

As the Spartans loaded up to stop the Heisman Trophy victor, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said Alabama “nibbled” outside against lighter coverage. Running behind defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed, Henry punched it in for his SEC-record breaking 24th touchdown, and with 5:36 left in the first half it was 7-0 Tide.
“We knew that in order to win this game, it would come down to Jake making plays and pass protection and our wide receivers outside”, Kiffin said on the field after the win. Except for a brief spell near the end of the second quarter – which ended with an interception in the end zone – Cook never felt comfortable amid constant pressure from defensive ends Johnathan Allen and A’Shawn Robinson. The next Tide possession was a three-play, 69-yard sprint for a touchdown, all on the ground.
After a Connor Cook sac by Tim Williams, intentional grounding was called.
In the first quarter, the senior committed an unforced fumble while scrambling 13 yards back from MSU defenders.
Clemson took the second-half kickoff and breezed down the field, covering 75 yards in 12 plays to reclaim the lead on Wayne Gallman’s 1-yard run, the first of his two TDs.
The second long completion to Ridley, in the third quarter, was a 50-yard touchdown pass to make the score 31-0 as Alabama continued its rout. Michigan State doesn’t have a club that runs the ball particularly well.
“Inability to run the football consistently obviously hurt us”. “First time all year that’s happened to us”. “So you’ve got to pick up the pieces and move forward”. We’re four out of 16 on third down.
Alabama 38, Michigan State 0. I think he did a great job of reading it. And that was effective for us early in the game.
“I think that Michigan State’s program has improved and kept growing”, Saban said. Heading into another game as a big favorite against the Big Ten champions, the Tide players said all week that the focus was better and their attitude more serious. “… Tonight, he had to make the plays because they were there and he certainly made them”.
Just over one week since Santa finished his business, college football’s St. Nick put a real grinching on a really good team. And with Cyrus’ [Jones] touchdown which kind of broke the game open.
That was about all his team was allowed to do, and that came only because Alabama deferred after winning the coin toss. Against a team coached by a former Alabama player, this national championship could be the defining game of Saban’s time in Tuscaloosa.
“We didn’t know if (Michigan State) would come with something different today”. But because of the result and the bad taste of losing a game when you had a chance to win… “We’re just so lucky to play for Coach (Dantonio) and all the other coaches”. “Some of those plays, if the box was right, Derrick Henry would have got the ball”.
Nine players already had their bachelor’s degrees before the current season began, including Coker, Kelly and Luatua as well as D.J. Pettway, Chris Black, Bradley Sylve, Jabriel Washington, Richard Mullaney and Adam Griffith. Jake Coker played the game of his life, completing 25 of 30 passes for 286 yards and a pair of well-placed touchdown passes to Calvin Ridley.
