The fire broke out in Chanderkote camp where workers and technical staffs were staying. “The dead includes earth mover operators, helpers and labourers from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and different places of Jammu and Kashmir”, Senior Superintendent of Police Randip Kumar said.
They said six men who had suffered injuries had been taken to the district government hospital in Ramban.
The victims were working for a private firm and were engaged in construction work on Jammu-Srinagar national highway. “The workers were sleeping in a pre-fabricated hut, which apparently caught fire due to short-circuit though exact reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained, ” said Ramban SP Randeep Kumar.
