Nylander, Forsling lead Sweden past Canada
Sweden ensured they completed the Group A at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship with a 100 per cent record after they overcame defending champions Canada in Helsinki.

“It can’t not be exciting”, said Virtanen, when asked why he thought the daunting task was exciting.
Regardless of who was in charge of pulling the plug, Nylander missed his third straight game as Sweden downed Canada 5-2 on Thursday.
“It’s about Finland and it’s about the next game”.
Mitchell Marner (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Mitchell Stephens (Tampa Bay Lightning) scored for Canada, and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (New Jersey Devils) made 27 saves.
Any momentum that Canada may have received after the goal was immediately wiped out by a penalty to Lawson Crouse, sending Canada to the box for the fourth time in the period. “I think we just came out a little slow but kind of picked it up there and just didn’t get to do all we wanted”.
The other three quarter-final matchups will see Russian Federation face Denmark, Sweden faces Slovakia and Team USA faces the Czech Republic.
Alexander Nylander, Gustav Forsling and Adrian Kempe all had power-play goals for Sweden (4-0), while Anton Karlsson had an even-strength goal and Rasmus Asplund added an empty-netter. “We try to forget those games that we’ve lost”. We really focused on trying to get bodies in front of the goalies. The second period saw Canada level the game, but despite multiple chances in the third, Canada was unable to secure a victory.
Is Canada considered a favourite over Finland? Canada took the first penalty and Sweden opened the scoring 17 seconds into the power play. Although that 8,200-seat arena was near capacity with boisterous Canadian fans for all four games, it will be a different story on Saturday. He one-timed a pass into Canada’s net from a sharp angle to make it 3-1.
The Finns were 3-1 in Group “B” and have the tournament’s top three scorers, Sebastian Aho and 2016 draft eligibles Jesse Pulujarvi and Patrik Laine. And we kind of knew that coming in.
The Flames got great performances out of youngsters Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and TJ Brodie and veterans Mark Giordano and Jiri Hudler and throughout the season showed an uncanny ability to rally late in games to earn victories or points that helped them keep pace.
The Czechs are now due to meet the United States in the quarter-final, while a relegation playoff between Switzerland and Belarus is due to take place next Tuesday (January 5).
Sweden attempted to match the physical play, with defenders going out of their way to get hits on Canadian forwards along the boards in their own end.
Nylander was injured in the first period of the tournament’s opening game after taking a hit to the head from Switzerland’s Chris Egli. Those struggles largely fall at the feet of Veini Vehvilainen, who has started three of Finland’s games.
NYLANDER 2.0 – William Nylander’s younger brother Alex, however, will definitely be on the ice.

Instead, Sweden’s team doctor told reporters that the team hopes Nylander will play later in the tournament.
