USA singer and Grammy Award-winning artist Natalie Cole has passed away at the age of 65.
In a 2000 autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, Cole related how she struggled with depression, most painfully after the death of her father and the near-drowning of her son in a swimming pool.
Nat “King” Cole died of lung cancer in 1965.
She famously performed “Unforgettable” as a virtual duet with her dad in 1991, which was a huge hit. “With Love”, an album of songs related to her father, the silky-voiced singer who was one of the most popular performers of the 1940s and ’50s but died before his daughter began her solo career.
Cole, who had struggled with a variety of health issues in recent years, died Thursday night, according to publicist Maureen O’Connor.
“Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived – with dignity, strength and honour”, her family said in a statement.
Years after reclaiming her life from drug addiction, Cole was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2008.

While Cole was a Grammy victor in her own right, she had her greatest success in 1991 when she re-recorded her father’s classic hits – with him on the track – for the album “Unforgettable…”
Cole’s other hits included “Everlasting”, “Sophisticated Lady”, “I’ve Got love on My Mind”, and “Good to Be Back”.
“That was really my thank you”, she told People magazine in 2006. “With Love”, which sold roughly 14 million copies, as well as winning six Grammy’s, and featured several re-done versions of her late father’s most beloved tunes.
“I don’t remember what I sounded like, I was too much in awe of her”, she said in her lengthy Instagram tribute.
Born Feb. 6, 1950, in Los Angeles, Cole had music in her genes. The statement said the disease was revealed during a routine examination and was likely caused by her drug use years ago. He toured worldwide, and in 1956, he became the first black entertainer to host a national TV variety show. She eventually entered rehab in 1983.

“I’m an ex-drug addict and I don’t take that kind of stuff lightly”, Cole explained at the 2009 Grammy Awards. But you know the saying: These are the best of times and the worst of times.
