Bruins, Canadiens players pay tribute to Patriots with helmet designs
When all was said and done, David Desharnais, Paul Byron (twice), Brendan Gallagher and Max Pacioretty added to their goal totals while the Bruins managed to only get their offensive game going in spurts. The four-goal win was the largest in the annual outdoor event since it began in 2008.

The most storied rivalry in NHL history takes to the outdoors on Friday, as the Montreal Canadiens visit the Boston Bruins for the 2016 NHL Winter Classic.
Julian Edelman posted this photo on Twitter, with his face, along with Danny Amendola, Rob Gronkowski and head coach Bill Belichick photoshopped on to Bruins players on the bench. The Boston Pride tied the Montreal Canadiennes 1-1 at the home of the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. “I was pretty happy and hopefully I had some mojo there on my helmet … huge fan of his, huge fan of this organization and I was just happy to pay respect to them”.
“Any time we play Montreal, it’s a big game and it seems like this is a bigger game”, Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said of the Winter Classic.
The feisty right winger, who missed 17 games with two broken fingers on his left hand, returned with a goal and an assist to help the Canadiens to an easy 5-1 Classic victory over the Boston Bruins before a crowd of 67,246.
Brendan Gallagher and Mike Condon celebrate the Canadiens’ 5-1 win. Friday they outshot and outscored the Bruins immensely, playing strong defense and pushing Boston out of their zone so effectively that there was a ten-minute period during the game where the Bruins didn’t register a single shot on goal. “That’s why we were successful at the beginning of the year, everybody was contributing and with him back, I mean, he’s a big part of our team”. Bruins fans thought they could breathe a sigh of relief near the midway point of the second when the puck ended up behind Condon and in the Canadiens net but it was not to be as it was waved off because the refs had blown the whistle before it went in.
“Tuukka was the reason why we were down by one”, Boston center Patrice Bergeron said. Meanwhile, the Canadiens got off to a franchise-record 9-0-0 start and they were 13-3-0 after they beat the Bruins Nov. 7. Gallagher’s return gave the Canadiens a boost and led to their third goal.
And then there was Gallagher, the game’s first star. Rask took a shot off the shoulder midway through the third period and needed medical attention, but he remained in the game….

“It’s hard to get to the Winter Classic because it costs a lot of money”, said Fornaro. They have lost 11 of the 18 games they played since Gallagher was placed on injured reserve, winning only 39 percent of their games. The 2010 game was at Fenway Park.
