On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. was preparing fresh sanctions against companies and individuals in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates over alleged links to Tehran s ballistic missile programme.
“The publication of such false news under the present circumstances is akin to psychological warfare”, Sharif was quoted as saying by Reuters.
U.S. officials told NBC News that the Truman was being escorted through the strait by a United States destroyer.
The unguided rockets, even assuming they hit the Truman, would not be enough to sink the vessel, but a strike could have damaged it. Rather than rockets, the real danger to US vessels in the region would be from sea mines, which are responsible for damaging or sinking the majority of USA vessels lost since World War II.
“While most interactions between Iranian forces and the U.S. Navy are professional, safe and routine, this event was not and runs contrary to efforts to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime safety in the global commons.”
This incident takes place within a significant broader U.S.- Iranian context because the much-discussed nuclear deal between the two countries took a major step forward recently.
Iran’s “actions were highly provocative”, Raines said.
Such a move by the US Treasury Department would be the first American sanctions against Iran since the nuclear agreement.
The Iranian Emad – a liquid-fuel, intermediate-range ballistic missile. However, the official said the French military did not consider it to be a threatening incident as the rocket fire clearly wasn’t directed toward the Western fleet.
An Iranian Revolutionary Guards spokesman dismissed the USA claim as a “psychological operation”.
The deal reached with moderate President Hassan Rouhani’s administration has been panned by Iranian hard-liners, and in the months since, Iran has conducted missile tests criticized by the US, as well as aired footage on state television of an underground missile base.
In reaction, General Ramezan Sharif stressed that the IRGC Navy has held no drills across the Strait of Hormuz within the past week.

On Thursday, foreign ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari said Iran would “respond to any interventionist measure by the U.S. against its defense”, which has “no connection” to the nuclear deal.
