Having spent more than 40 years in the music industry, having followed in the footsteps of her famous father Nat King Cole, news of her death provoked a flurry of tributes from her peers, with legendary jazz singer Tony Bennett posting a heartfelt message on Instagram on Friday (01Jan16). She was attending boarding school in MA when he died of lung cancer in 1965.
In an interview with People magazine, Cole said of the diagnosis: “My life crumbled before my eyes”.
She bounced back, and her career reached the superstar level in 1991 when she recorded “Unforgettable…”
After a long and wonderful night playing music with my friends, waking up to the news of Ms. Natalie Cole’s death was heartbreaking and sombering, especially on a day meant for celebration and new beginnings.
After overcoming personal challenges, Cole returned in peak form with 1987’s “Everlasting”, an album which garnered three hit singles: “Jump Start (My Heart)”, the Top 10 ballad “I Live For Your Love”, and her dance-pop cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac”.
The album sold some 14 million copies and won six Grammys, including album of the year as well record and song of the year for the title track duet.
Later in her career, Cole also tried her hand at acting on programs like Touched by an Angel, Law & Order: SVU and Gray’s Anatomy. During a March 2009 appearance on Larry King Live, her fans’ love for her was apparent.
Cole, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, wrote a pair of memoirs and starred in a 2001 made-for-TV movie Livin’ For Love: The Natalie Cole Story.
Cole was married three times and leaves behind a son, Robert Adam “Robbie” Yancy, from her first marriage to producer Marvin Yancy.
Cole became addicted to crack cocaine and heroin, even at times sharing needles with audience members. Cole had undergone a kidney transplant in 2009 and had suffered from other ailments recently, forcing the cancellation of tour dates in November and December. “You can go through turbulent times and still have victory in your life”.
