“It was the remote-controlled improvised explosive device blast fixed in a motorcycle” said senior police officials saying the blast could have been catastrophic had the bomber managed to enter the building.

The raids were carried out in Jalozai refugees camp as a bike-borne Taliban suicide bomber yesterday blew himself up outside the office of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). A security guard stopped a biker near the gate, when he detonated the bomb, said Saeed Khan, deputy inspector general. The blast occurred at a time when scores of people were lining up to apply for Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs).

Security officials said although there was no specific threat, the Nadra office had been asked to revamp its security by installing CCTV cameras and other equipment. The area was cordoned off as rescue and security sources rushed to the site.

The injured, several of them critical, were shifted to Mardan Medical Complex and other hospitals in the city, where a state of emergency has been declared.

President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan strongly condemned the terrorist attack near NADRA office Mardan, in which precious lives were lost. A suicide blast in Mardan has killed 16 and wounded at least 30.
