In a statement, Lapsley confirmed 18 dwellings at Separation Creek and 98 at Wye River were lost and noted that rain and cooler conditions had reduced fire activity.
Some of the buildings destroyed were holiday homes and many residents spent Christmas night in hastily organized evacuation centres.
The fire stopped just 400 metres short of Kennett Creek, he said.
TOM NIGHTINGALE: Angus Greene’s house wasn’t destroyed in the blaze, but about one in three houses in Wye River were.
The fire along the Great Ocean Road, a national heritage stretch of road along the south-eastern coast, began on Christmas Day with police beginning to evacuate houses in some areas around midday.
Mr Drayton said more than 150 firefighters, 60 fire trucks and eight waterbombing aircraft were at the scene. They will be given as much support as we can give them and financial support beyond that.
30 millimetres of train has helped dampen the fire somewhat, but it is feared the blaze could once again flare up come New Years.
The fires started with a lightning strike on December 19 and, fanned by winds, have burned more than 2,000 hectares. Residents were told they could go home after an evacuation recommendation was lifted shortly after 9am on Saturday.
A further community meeting has been scheduled to be held in Lorne at the Cumberland Resort at 5pm for residents to receive further updates.
Anyone intending to travel to the region will be asked to avoid the Great Ocean Road if possible also to assess crisis warnings.

So that’s the balance that we’re working through now.

“There are a lot of areas we have not been able to get into”, Steve Warrington, deputy head of the Country Fire Authority, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as he detailed the losses.
