Elephant seal stops traffic in California

The California Highway Patrol had quite the traffic disturbance when the 500-pound seal reportedly tried to make her way over a highway divider. Officials said the CHP first got the call about the seal crawling across Highway 37 near Sears Point, in Sonoma County, at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28.

Tolay is on the petite side for elephant seals – cows typically way up to 2,000 pounds – but she’s still been able to establish a bit of a fan base. State Fish and Wildlife wardens responded and helped guide the animal back toward the tidal waters where she then took up a spot on a mudflat.
