Day one of open carry law in Texas
That being said, we respond to the legislature’s direction, they have passed this law and we now stand ready to respect the new law and enforce the law as appropriate.

Mitchell said he doesn’t believe anyone knows yet how the new law will affect Temple or the state.
“That’s all still the same as it was for the concealed carry”, Eppler said.
Now there is no standard that constitutes what is a shoulder or belt holster.
“It’s blown all out of proportion”, Harris said.
Does Open Carry put his officers at greater risk? “Anytime you add weapons – whether it’s a gun, a club, or a knife – into a situation, you’re increasing the element of danger”, said the chief. “But I do have that option if I decide to, like when I am hunting, for example”.
Officers of the APD will not detain a person openly carrying a firearm exclusively for the objective of checking a handgun carry license. It’ll be the largest state to sanction some form of open carry, with California, Florida, Illinois, New York and SC still banning it. Texas had almost 826,000 concealed license holders in 2014, which ranks among the nation’s highest.
The Texas Department of Public Safety cites 212,795 CHL holders in the state.
Additionally, the court will meet in executive session to consult with the county’s attorney in regard to “pending or threatened litigation, settlement offers, claims, or other matters” concerning “legal issues and potential liabilities regarding handgun laws and regulation of handguns in certain county buildings”.
John Wittman, a spokesman for Gov. Greg Abbott, a longtime proponent of gun rights who signed the bill into law in June, declined to comment when asked whether the governor would openly carry. Police in Round Rock even created a video about the new law to instruct the public on how to determine whether someone with a gun poses a threat.
The bill that finally did come out, get voted on and enacted into law does allow peace officers the authority to check an individual’s license upon request.
If there are any doubts, residents should err on the side of caution.
“You’re going to see people with guns now in places you’ve never seen them before”, McClelland says.
Businesses and places of worship can choose to ban open-carry but according to the law, the only way to stop guns from coming through the door is to post signs outside all of the entrances. The signs must have specific phrasing in both English and Spanish. When that requirement is met, the signs end up being about 3-feet-by-4-feet. In most cases, parking lots, sidewalks and driveways are not included in the definition of premises. Government meetings can be gun free with a notice.
Hoffman doesn’t believe the law will make any dramatic changes to the area. Like the saloons of old, some cowboys might just have to leave their guns at the door (or more properly, secured in their car).
The next time you walk into a bank, you could see a customer packing a pistol on their hip.
If I use a “drop leg” holster that holds my gun around the middle of my thigh, will I get arrested for having an improper holster? “What he was doing [scaring the hell out of parents and children] was perfectly legal. You just can’t carry it anyway you want”.

The upshot is that the sight of civilians carrying visible weapons is about to become commonplace in the Lone Star State.
