McCaffrey runs wild as Stanford swamps Iowa in Rose Bowl
McCaffrey played an equally pivotal role in the Cardinal’s next series when he gained all but one of Stanford’s 65 yards on a drive that moved the ball from the Cardinal 26-yard line to the Iowa 8.

McCaffrey set a record for most all-purpose yards in Rose Bowl history with 368.
Iowa waited 25 years to make a return trip to the Rose Bowl.
This was Stanford’s second Rose Bowl victory of the decade and seventh in school history. The Stanford player with the second-most tackles had just 57. But while the tradition of the game involves a parade and football, lately the band from Stanford also made a decision to use the halftime show to take shots at the other team.
It was over when: Before fans had settled into their seats, Stanford had a 7-0 lead after scoring on a 75-yard TD pass on the first play of the game. He also had a 73-yard run touchdown that was called back because of a holding penalty.
“It doesn’t happen very often that we get together like this”, said Garrett McClain, who like his younger brother Evan, is a University of Iowa alumni.
“They know about him now”, Stanford guard Joshua Garnett said. Iowa is now 2-4 in six Rose Bowl appearances. More importantly, the program distanced itself from three seasons (2012-2014) in which former coach Brady Hoke went 20-18.
When the story of the 2015 season is re-told in future years, McCaffrey will be its protagonist and the Cardinal quite possibly will be remembered as the what-if team. Michigan State’s 16-13 victory over Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game gave it the No. 3 ranking in the final College Football Playoff rankings and a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff. That 10 yards a pop average doesn’t feel exaggerated by 1-2 big runs (although he did bust some big gains on the Iowa defense, too) – it really did feel like every time he got the ball, he simply teleported at least 10 yards down the field, leaving a trail of Iowa defenders juked out of their socks in his wake.
“I’m someone who believes in having motivation at all times, win or lose”, he said.
“He’s a tremendous football player”, marveled Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.
Yet there was once a time when Don had just celebrated his 22nd birthday and, the next day, brought the 1959 Rose Bowl. But a few plays later, Beathard threw a not-so-great pass that was intercepted by Cardinal defensive back Quenton Meeks and returned 66 yards for a touchdown, turning the game into a first-quarter blowout at 21-0. McCaffrey has been responsible for all four.
He had 172 yards rushing, 105 yards receiving and 91 on kick returns, putting an appropriate cap on the season in which he set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards.
The closest anyone had come to the 100-100 double was O.J. Simpson, with 171 rushing and 85 receiving. “But just like this game won’t define this team, one play doesn’t define a game”. And he did it for a Stanford team that played one of the toughest schedules in the country while playing only FBS opponents.

“I think you’re gonna have that Hawkeye spirit no matter where you are, whether you’re physically at the game or you’re home in Iowa”, Lisa Hannan, diehard Iowa fan, said.
