Two Turkish police officers killed in Kurdish southeast
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu canceled a planned meeting with the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday, saying its politics were rooted in violence, as government forces pursued a security operation in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Two police officers, a soldier and 12 Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters have been killed in Turkey’s southeast in the space of 48 hours in operations to push back the militant group, the army says.
In the latest operations, curfews imposed on December 14 are still in place in the towns of Silopi and Cizre in Sirnak province which normally have populations of some 100,000.
The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU.
“Dozens others were injured in the artillery shelling”, the source said, adding that most of the wounded civilians are being treated in houses as the curfew prevents the medical teams from transferring people to the town’s hospital.
Additionally, Turkish anti-terror police have arrested eight suspected PKK militants in the capital Ankara, a security source said Thursday, accusing them of planning a New Year’s Eve attack.
Fighting has been particularly intense in the last two weeks and the military says more than 210 Kurdish militants have been killed.
Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish southeast has plunged back into some of its worst violence since the 1990s after a two-year ceasefire between the PKK and the state collapsed in July.
Twelve PKK terrorists have also been killed in the Cizre district of Sirnak province on Thursday, the Turkish General Staff announced.
The PKK launched a formal insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984, initially fighting for Kurdish independence although it now presses more for greater autonomy.

The European Court of Human Rights has asked Turkey to submit a defense statement over the ongoing curfew in the southeastern district of Cizre until January 8, a news report said on Friday. The conflict has left tens of thousands dead.
