Odd even scheme kicks off, Delhi Police officials on toes
The odd-even policy has many exemptions including two-wheelers, which number in lakhs, cars driven by women, emergency vehicles and a string of VIPs. The Chief Minister said the scheme will not be permanently implemented and made it clear that it may be enforced periodically when pollution level spikes.

Meanwhile, the traffic department caught 65 people for violating.
Rai, who criss crossed areas across Delhi to take stock of the scheme’s implementation, also “wholeheartedly” thanked Delhi Police for ensuring implementing the scheme with total commitment. “I am confident that in coming days too Delhiites will continue to support our endeavor as they will choose health of their children over their own comfort”, added Rai.
Just under three million of these are private cars or vans, but auto sales are soaring as incomes rise, with 1,400 extra vehicles pouring onto the city’s already crowded roads every day. The scheme, aimed at cutting down the number of cars in the world’s most polluted city, restricts the use of cars bearing odd numbers to odd numbers dates and even-numbered cars on even dates.
“You don’t have to challan, you don’t have get into arguments, you don’t have to misbehave or stop cars”.
Added A. Mahalingam, a south Delhi resident: “I saw only four even-numbered vehicles on the roads today”. Over 200 people were challaned today for the violation of norms under the scheme on the first day of its implementation in the national capital.
There were also people who took out their cars with even-numbered registration numbers, but the Delhi police prosecuted 138 people for violating the odd-even rule.
The Chief Minister carpooled to work, giving Transport Minister Gopal Rai and Jain a experience to the Delhi secretariat in his Innova numbered 0001.
Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, who came to the Secretariat from his home in East Delhi, tweeted: “Wow Delhi Thank you for making #OddEvenFormula a success… just reached office on bike.no traffic”. It has become a movement and we are truly overwhelmed by the response.
They also counselled the motorists to follow the Delhi government’s odd-even plan and asked them to return. Another civil defence volunteer, who did not wish to be named, said his group refrained from entering into any argument with the violators and requested them to comply with the rule. The real test of the scheme’s effectiveness will be next week as a number of private offices were closed on Friday.
Also the schools are having winter vacation, which would have taken off some load off the roads.

Delhiites put their weight behind the most drastic anti-pollution measure conceived in India by largely embracing the odd-even scheme that kicked in on New Year’s day. One such board outside Delhi Secretariat read suspended particulate matter PM 2.5 and PM 10 at 360 and 480 micrograms per cubic metre, respectively, at 9.30 am, several times above safe limits.
