Munich stations reopen after ISIS-linked plot
Police in the German city of Munich are maintaining a heightened presence following warnings of a planned attack on New Year’s Eve.

“We still have significant police deployment at Munich central station and Pasing station, but this has been significantly reduced compared to last night”, Joachim Herrmann said on Friday of the two stations closed just before midnight after German authorities received a tip that attacks were planned.
In Russia, the state-run news agency RIA Novosti said that about 500 people had been evacuated from two train stations in Moscow after the police were told that bombs had been planted.
“We received names. We can’t say if they are in Munich or in fact in Germany”, Andrae reportedly said, when asked about the suspects’ whereabouts. “Based on information available and evaluated by us as credible”, a translation of a post police put on social media reads.
Herrmann told Bavarian state television that there was still a high risk of a terrorist attack throughout Europe, but there was now “no direct indication of an attack today or tomorrow on a specific place”.
Police ordered the evacuation of the city’s central train station and Pasing station, a major suburban hub.
Hubertus Andrä, the Munich police chief, said the decision to evacuate the stations and issue an alert had been made after a detailed warning from French intelligence which included the names of some of the suspects.
Police officers guard the main entrance in front of Munich main station. He said they had received personal data for some of the alleged attackers and were in the process of investigating and verifying the information.
The two stations were shut down and evacuated around midnight, while special unit police officers armed with automatic weapons were stationed at entrances.
He is quoted by German newspaper Bild as saying: “The Bavarian authorities have prudently with the support of the Federal Police, level-headed and decisive action”.
Security concerns had already caused New Year celebrations to be cancelled or limited in other European cities.
The newspaper reported the plot involved plans for suicide bombers to detonate explosives at the stations, with others waiting to detonate secondary devices when emergency services arrived at the scene.
Belgian police said late on Thursday three people were being held for questioning as part of an investigation into the plot.

The game had been scheduled within a week of the November 13 attacks on Paris, in which 130 people died; the German national team were in Paris that night, too, losing 2-0 to France in a friendly.
