Stanford dominates Iowa as McCaffrey sets Rose Bowl record
McCaffrey, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, also became the first player to top 100 yards rushing and receiving in the 102-year history of the Rose Bowl.

Exactly 11 seconds into the 102nd Granddaddy of them All, Stanford running back/wide receiver/Superman Christian McCaffrey crossed the goal line on a dazzling 75-yard touchdown reception after weaving, bobbing, cutting and flying past a bunch of stunned Iowa defenders.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore piled up 3,496 all-purpose yards – an FBS single-season record breaking the former record of 3,250 yards by Barry Sanders in 1988.
Then on second-and-3, Hogan faked a handoff to McCaffrey before running in the opposite direction toward the left sideline for an 8-yard scoring run just 2:47 into the game.
McCaffrey caught a touchdown pass on the opening snap and returned a punt 66 yards for another score Friday while racking up 368 all-purpose yards, propelling No. 5 Stanford to a 45-16 victory against Iowa.
Kevin Hogan passed for 223 yards and three TDs in his final game for the Cardinal (12-2), who won the Rose Bowl for the second time in three trips over the past four years for this unlikely football powerhouse.
Coach David Shaw said his team had been working on the play off and on for some time, something he liked after watching Boise State execute it in a game six years ago. “We just didn’t get it going offensively”. Some of the guests came to town from out of state just to watch the Hawkeyes play.
McCaffrey needed only 20 touches to achieve the Rose Bowl yardage record.
Blythe started the last of his 49 games for the Hawkeyes on Friday, and in that span, he experienced only one loss by a margin greater than that of the Rose Bowl.
“For us to dominate up front and prove to people in the Big Ten that we can scrap with them, get down and dirty with them, that means a lot”.
On the second drive for No. 6 Stanford, McCaffrey slithered through two piles of tacklers, turning what would have been a short gain for 98 percent of college football backs into a 22-yard thrill ride. Hogan’s throw to McCaffrey was the second-longest TD pass in Rose Bowl history and the longest play given up all season by the stingy Iowa defense.
Combined with the record-smashing performance in the Pac-12 title game, McCaffrey ended the season with 829 all-purpose yards in two games – 379 rushing, 210 receiving and 240 in return yards – with five touchdowns.
“It’s impossible to duplicate (McCaffrey) out there on the practice field”, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “He had it going and it was tough for us to stop it”.
The Heisman is supposed to go to the best player each season.
Stanford (12-2) began its dominance on the first play from scrimmage.
For those who rightfully argue that it’s nearly impossible to capture the attention of the entire country when you play on the West Coast, there’s one fact to toss out. “We had ample opportunity after that to play, but they played a tremendous game in all phases”. Iowa is now 2-4 in six Rose Bowl appearances.
Iowa hadn’t trailed by more than seven points at any point in its magnificent season until Friday.
McCaffrey had a 74-yard touchdown run on the Cardinal’s next series nullified because of a holding penalty.
When the story of the 2015 season is re-told in future years, McCaffrey will be its protagonist and the Cardinal quite possibly will be remembered as the what-if team.
Stanford even got creative – or cruel, depending on your perspective. The Cardinal racked up 429 yards compared to Iowa’s 287.

In fact, each and every time the Hawkeyes scored, the family stood up and did a cheer spelling out their team’s name I-O-W-A.
